Introductory Flight Lesson – Your First Step Toward a Pilot License
For many aspiring pilots, the journey into aviation begins with a simple question: What is it actually like to fly an airplane? An introductory flight lesson gives you the opportunity to experience real flight training while sitting in the pilot’s seat next to a certified flight instructor (CFI). Sometimes called a discovery flight, the lesson is designed to give you a genuine look at what pilot training is like.
From the moment you arrive, you will be introduced to the basics of how pilots prepare for a flight. Your instructor will explain the aircraft and review fundamental flight concepts. Once the pre-flight inspection is complete, you and the instructor will hop on the aircraft. After turning it on, you will taxi to the runway and complete an engine check before take-off.
During the flight, you will have the opportunity to fly the aircraft with the controls and experience how the airplane responds in the air. You’ll actually get the chance to fly the aircraft yourself under the guidance of the instructor! Maneuvers like turning the airplane or maintaining altitude can give you a great sense of what flying is really like.
An introductory lesson is also an opportunity to see how flight training operates on a day-to-day basis. You will experience how instructors teach in the cockpit, how communication with other aircraft and air traffic control happens, and how pilots maintain awareness of their surroundings. It provides a realistic preview of the training environment and will help you understand what the path to earning a pilot's license is like.
The time you spend in the aircraft can also count toward your future flight training if you decide to continue working towards an FAA Pilot’s License. That means your introductory flight is not just an experience, but a meaningful first step in your aviation journey.
A discovery flight is a low-pressure, low-commitment way to explore aviation and get a clear understanding of what learning to fly involves. Consider signing up for an introductory flight if you’re curious about becoming a pilot, considering aviation as a career, or simply want to see if flight training is right for you. Our instructors are there to answer questions, explain the training process, and help you decide whether continuing flight training makes sense for your goals.
If you have ever thought about becoming a pilot, an introductory flight lesson is the perfect place to start. You’ll get a hands-on experience, an understanding of the training process, and a chance to see the world from a completely new perspective. For many of our students, that first lesson is the beginning of a lifelong passion for aviation.
